In 2009, Falmouth Historical Society and the Town of Falmouth are
celebrating Katharine Lee Bates, educator, writer and author of “America the
Beautiful".
Born in Falmouth in 1859, Katharine spent the first 12 years of her life in
Falmouth before moving with her family to Wellesley Hills. She graduated from
Wellesley College and went on to become head of its English Literature Department.
Katharine’s legacy to us is her ability to find inspiration in the world around
us, her belief in the best of people and her courage to take risks in the fight
against the injustices of the world. She was a woman of her times and for all
times.
